q score

(graphic score album)

In the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic I, along with so many others, felt deeply disembodied from my surrounding communities and powerless in the face of so much strife. In an attempt o hold on to a sense of agency, and to throw at least a drop of positive force into the well,  I created a graphic score (shown above) for 5 other musicians and myself to record our individual interpretations to. The result in the album QSCORE. In those days of the pandemic there were many undocumented folks who, not being able toreceive the stimulus checks, were only being invited into the labor part of the U.S. labor economy.  All proceeds from QSCORE purchases then, now, and forever more will be sent to NDLON (National Day Labor Organizing Network). If you would like to listen to purchase QSCORE, do so here: https://galenpassen.bandcamp.com/album/qscore

The score was created over a 24 hour period of time, each of the six columns being created every 4 hours. In an abruptly schedule-less life I wanted to invent a new lens for timekeeping. Each column was created in accordance with the level of light and my own emotional state at the moment. If you are a musician and would like to play/record your own interpretation you may download the directions here. Please credit me if you share on social media or other platforms (@galenpassen):

This piece was composed and recorded in 2014 for a collaboration with dancer/choreographer, Jeannette Hardie. There was very little conceptualization, it was abstract music and movement. The musicians who play on the track are Nawahine Lanzilotti (Cello), Ananddev Banerjee (guitar), and myself (mandolin).
